The first pic was from Huffington Post’s coverage of James Holmes’ 2012’s mass shooting in a Colorado theater. James Holmes was humanized throughout the media as a “brilliant student” and a “bright mind” despite dressing up in a Batman outfit and mowing down dozens of people in a theater without cause.
You can google “theater suspect shooter brillant student” and PAGES of links come up from media outlets pushing the theme that this guy was smart and human and normal and his violent act was something that just kinda happened to him.
But that’s the norm when it comes to these sort of perps, isn’t it?
Contrast that with coverage of the Ferguson Police’s murder of Mike Brown…
The second pic is the same media quick to run with unquestioned and uncorroborated police claims that Mike Brown instigated his own murder by punching a cop. Even if Brown had punched a cop and run as they claim, that doesn’t justify shooting an unarmed man multiple times.
They also ran with the pic of Brown with his fingers up in what most with common sense would see as a peace sign, yet it’s being speculated that the 17yro with no gang ties, no trouble with the law is some sort of thug.
But this is common coverage of violence against Black males regardless of the perpetrator—somehow they’re lesser and deserve to die.
stay tuned.

Important Updates on Ferguson

thewilsonblog:

It feels like my body is entirely filled with fire. The anger I feel is sickening and it continues to grow as I read the tweets of what’s happening. I’m angry, hurting, and teary eyed but I’m going to try my best to channel all of that into something that makes sense. If you have any extra…

Michael Brown was 17 years old when he was shot multiple times in the back by police. His body was left in the street for four hours. A candlelight vigil was held in his memory where the police showed up in riot gear with armored vehicles, assault weapons and dogs. The police formed a line refusing to let vigil-goers leave and fired rubber bullets instigating the crowd so they could be met with violence. If you think the rioting and looting is the issue here you’re standing on the wrong side.

Missed The Boat // Modest Mouse

while we’re on the subject
could we change the subject now?
i was knocking on your ear’s door but you were always out
looking towards the future
we were begging for the past
well we knew we had the good things
but those never seemed to last
oh please just last
